Re: Pan American Highway to Peru

man, that trip sounds like a blast. i can't speak for a lot of south america, but i'd be very nervous about the trip through central america. i have a good friend that worked in several places in mexico and just got married this past june in leon. the word from him and his wife (originally from leon) is that it's quite risky to be going thru mexico these days by yourself or with just one other person if you're american unless you're sticking to main highways and are somewhat fluent in spanish. he said it's definitely worse closer to the US border, but even in central mexico it's still not the smartest thing to be doing. he said that it's unlikely you'd be killed, but you definitely have to worry about getting stopped, mugged, clothes and bike stolen.

that being said, where do i sign up? going through peru would definitely be on my list of wish trips
I understand your point and I'd like to agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

2puppies, here's a great little practice run and the guy makes some excellent points on the realities of the big "dirt" bikes (tiger,gs,etc.).

You may have seen this already, but it's at the extreme end of the spectrum and his report is a hoot to read. Does almost everything "wrong" and still has an amazing journey.

You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!

This answered addressed a lot of my concerns. Hell, I dumped the Tiger on a mountains side on Colorado and had to have the Wookie help me get it up.
