    Pan American Highway to Peru

I have this yearning to ride to South America and back. Would anyone do this trip today or is it a suicide mission? Chewie, you input is valuable because I think you've done this trip. Anyone else have this yearning? How about you Socal peeps? Or Nicene?

Actually, if I did this trip I would go all the way to the southern tip of South America.

    I'm serious about this shit.

    You'll have to first

Seriously, there a ton of threads on AdvRider in the Trip Reports with folks (men and women often solo) on every bike combo from HD baggers to heavily modded dirt bikes. All the good, bad and the ugly on food, water, health, repairs, government, military, criminals, etc., etc. If you can arrange time and $, do it NOW!, and don't wait for someday. Being fluent in or at least a little Spanish speaking abilities would be very helpful (A quick quiz. Yes or No, Taco Bell is the Mexican Telephone equivalent of AT&T? If you answered yes, IMO you are ready to roll).

    Good Luck
You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!

I found Peru to be pretty safe, but by all reports, riding solo through Colombia may not be a good idea. I would do plenty of research before you do that.

I have heard that there are some parts of northern Peru where travelling solo can be risky and it appears that The Shining Path (Peruvian terrorist group that was shut down by the cops a few years ago) is making a comeback.

I found the people in Peru to be very friendly.

Been on ADV a lot looking for exactly what you mentioned. Thing is, you have to read through so much bull shit to get the info you need. All good bull shit mind you, but a lot of reading that doesn't answer my questions non the less. I saw a handful of hostel references and read through some good stuff while working today.

That's my fear. Damn cartels, bored rebels with guns from past civil wars, shady police and everything else that goes with the territory. On top of that, I'm American and that's not always a good thing in their eye's. This would be more on a 5 year plan if I did it. Maybe I'll reroute to Vancouver, down to San Fran, then head towards Durango while making my way home. I've got the bug......bad.

Re: Pan American Highway to Peru

ill be doing this sheite for sho. it will be a SoCal to Terra de Fuego trip. ROUND TRIP too, there and back. i met a couple a year or so ago that did it on KLR650's from Seattle to Terra de Fuego. they went there and rerouted to Costa Rica and flew the bikes back and rode home from Houston. i met them at Chaparral Motorsports as they were getting some supplies. i followed their blog as they traveled. http://chronotonic.com/southernexposure/

i offered a place to stay but they had to be in San Diego later that evening at a friends house.

ill do this trip on some kind of kitted out dirtbike that is massed produced and able to find parts everywhere. the KLR650 might be a contender too. ill do this on a 3-4 month timeline (or more) as i don't want to rush. ill want to sit and savor anything i want. its not like ill get back to do it again. ive read a few good blogs on this subject and i think there is enough info on the web to answer any questions. i think my answer to some of the areas that are "not friendly" is to ship the bike or fly around those areas. i guess at the necessary time, ill research that topic more.

i also plan on doing a SoCal to Barrow, Alaska too. I'm covering the Americas for sure
