It would be fun to know if the first 1050 models with larger oil cooler work better. Is the small oil cooler actually making it to run hotter from oil point of view.
I think the cooling is not a problem when running at high way speeds. The generator cover cools down and engine temp is low and there is lot of oil splashing around. I think failed stators were common even in cb900 -1979 model. As its air cooled. It would get so hot that the generator would melt if it would idle enough in traffic. But you can run it forever if it moves.
It would be good science to have temp meter inside the generator.

The newer crankcase castings have added oil passage to the stator. And the stator and cover are bigger. So will have more heat dissipating surface and more oil volume to move heat.
It does not help if in the older version the oil is cooler, if the stator has less of it.

^ makes sense, you can even tell the slight difference in the newer stator covers.![]()

Well i think i may have found some of the cause.
Whilst warming Speedy up to change the oil this afternoon,i thought i would check the charging voltage,it was down to just over 13 volts.
I then noticed the wire in the first photo looked burnt,so i felt it and it was hot,not ouchie fn wowah hot,but hot enough to have to let it go.
I took the fuse holder apart and found a bit of a mess (second photo)
Could this wire from the MOSFET RR to the battery + terminal be run without a fuse?
I don't know much about auto electrickery, but i thought the less connections the better.

I like shiny things.
Greggy you're right about less connections=better. However without a fuse you risk burning up the bike in a high current, like a short, situation.
For sure that fuse holder may need replacing with something more heavy duty that can take a higher current without burning up.

I'm getting flickering headlights. I think mine is about to crap out on me.

Dispo - have you got low voltage to go with the flickering headlights? When I had flickering headlights it turned out to be the headlight relay working its way loose, until it unplugged enough to have the lights go out, and only the park lights remain - a rather unpleasant surprise mid corner on an unlight back road on the way home...

BS, haven't grabbed the meter to check. Just noticed it last night. But she doesn't have the cranking power either. Might also be the shytty battery.
