I had a low speed off on my triple a couple of weeks back. Thought id got away with out to much damage until i noticed the gear selector shaft had sheared off just as it comes out of the engine. Luckily my local garage has a smashed up daytona engine that i was able to have the shaft out of. When we removed it we managed to get it out throught the sump by removing the limit bolt and then turning the shaft until it disengaged from the drum then it slid clear. Now im trying to do the same on my engine and i can get it to disengage. Has anyone had to change this before and if so any tips. Am thinking that the other engine had parts missing that might have helped. Dont want to strip mine further than i have to though.

Dano had the motor out of his Tona recently, he may be able to tell you more. If he misses this post, give a PM.
You think he's gone? He's not gone. That's the whole point! He's never gone!
i do have mine out, but havnt done this repair yet. i dont know the answer, sorry.

Thanks for the replys. Unfortunatly it looks like the engine needs to come out and be split! Good job its winter now. While its apart il have a good poke around and make sure its all healthy.
Wow James, I just posted almost the exact same thing a few minutes ago without seeing yours. I laid it down and the gear change shaft snapped at the first threaded area of the shaft (the one that the shift lever uses), but left the second threaded part. The damaged shift lever won't attach to it (might be able to get it to, we'll see). If I don't come up with a better solution I'll be doing the same as you, but with very little spare time I think I'll have to bring it into a local shop to have it done. Please update this thread with updates on your progress. Thanks.
James, just found this and it gives me hope...02 955 gear selector shaft
Still not got round to looking at it yet. Got a bathroom to finish and 2 chops im building to finish but il try and drop the engine soon and will take pictures and notes as i go.
That would be great. I'm going to need all the guidance I can get. I'd try going in through the alternator first and then drop it if that doesn't work.
Let me know how you make out. Did the exact same thing this afternoon to my 2001 955i ST. It was 25 degrees out side but anice day so I thought I'd go for a ride...coming out of the driveway hit the traffic stripe and next thing I know I'm layin in the road.... Snapped off the shifter at the first set of ribs. Looks like some cheap steel on that shaft. F'd up the clutch lefer too otherwise not too bad.
