    Cleaning Brake Calipers

I've been noticing some strange feeling in my front brake. I tok the pads out today to check them and see if I could get an idea of what's going on. Looks like I have two sticking pistons on one caliper, one pad is worn twice as much as the others. the pad wore evenly accross, but it's worn significantly more than the other side or the other calipers. So here's my dilema, a rebuild kit for these calipers cost more than I paid for the calipers themselves. The seals are good, there's no fluid anywhere, so I'm thinking I'll just take the calipers apart and clean them up to see if it helps the problem. If I **** it up I guess i'll just buy some new gixxer calipers. I still have the stock calipers, they'd work for a little bit.

So does anyone have any suggestions for taking the calipers apart and cleaning them? was going to use brake cleaner and a toothbrush

Sounds like you have it covered.

Make sure the calipers are floating freely. It may take a touch of anti-seize or high temp grease to keep them sliding well, just don't get near the pads.

I didn't think of using a grease, i'll try that. I just need to find the time to do it. I put the pads that came with th egixxer calipers in for now and cleaned up what I could. I think the rotors are a bit warped too, there's a slight vibration, maybe it's just the caliper sticking, but if not the Rotors will have to wait till winter.

It is very hard to warp bike rotors on the street. The only time I have seen it done on modern bikes is due to a dragging caliper. Clean it up and see if the vibration remains. If so, contact me and I will make you a great deal on stock rotors. One you can't refuse.

I thought it would be impossible, but that's pretty much what it feels like, seems this Caliper is doing exactly that though.

Pads transfer a small amount of material onto the surface of the disc, this is really the major portion of "bedding in" pads. Sometimes this material gets uneven or missing in spots. This can cause pulsing or vibrating discs that people frequently blame on warped discs. Cutting the discs down provides a fresh clean surface & people say "Yup, problem fixed, must have been warped." Try sanding the discs & rebedding the pads. It may be a cheap fix. You can sometimes accomplish the same thing by making a series of rapid high speed stops to get a nice even transfer.
