1050 Airbox on 955.....will it fit?

Hi..... I’m swapping out the subframe, seat, tank on my ‘04 955i for 1050 ‘07 parts.... but my hurdle is the air box! Will a 1050 unit drop straight onto the 955 ? Any advice/help is much appreciated, haters and ‘you’re wasting your time and money’ preachers need not respond ta... I’m in it for the challenge and end result! Cheers

Interesting problem. I think maybe? Dimensionally it should be close. However the problem is probably going to be the fuel pump and the ECU. I think probably they won't work together. Also the throttle bodies are similar, but not the same. Dimensionally they're probably close enough to make work with the airbox, but there are other issues. For instance the fuel rail is reversed between the two of them. Most of the vacuum plumbing is different, and the sensors on the airboxes are not the same.

I'm not saying it can't be made to work, just that there are a lot of differences. The fuel line and disconnect is different, and the plug is different. You've got an interesting project. The 1050 ECU is WAY different, so your 955i may not play well with the sensors and configuration. You might get away with flipping the fuel rail around (you can't use a 1050 fuel rail. Different injectors.) and if you figure out which sensors are which you might make it work. Or do some bodging to get the sensors from the 955 to approximately the right places on the 1050 airbox. Don't try cutting the airbox for "more flow." That will muck up things pretty bad and it won't run right. If you do have to make some cuts to make the airbox fit, be sure to seal up the holes, but I don't think you'll have to. I think your biggest problems will be getting the sensors right and making the fuel pump work.

That said, I have seen 2005-2008 1050 rear bodywork and sub-frame grafted to a 955 tank, and it looks pretty amazing. You may have to do some seat modifications though. If you have to go that route don't feel too bad. It also looks great with a 3:1:2 exhaust system.

Interesting, always thought the early 1050 bodywork the best looking, after the early 955i !
Went the other way with mine,1050 engine into earlier frame and bodywork, use the air box that is on
the engine you have, for less trouble with sensors. with no air box fitted to engine fit the tank and seat
and bolt it all up so it fits nice remove the tank, then get a plastic bag, squirt some expanding foam into it lay it on
the throttle bodies (seal em up just in case ) drop the tank on and let it expand to fill the available space,
compare what you have with the airbox and cut and plastic weld to make it fit as long as it doe'snt interfere
with the velocity stacks. 1050 fuel system pressure relief internally so only one pipe, fit the one to your rail and
blank the other end. don't think you will have that much trouble as late 955 and 1050 dimensions close.

I'm doing something similar with my 04 but I am keeping the 04 tank to simplify matters. The 05-07 bodywork matches up perfectly to the bottom edge of the 04 tank.

I am currently figuring out how to modify the 05 subframe to install the 04 tank mount.

here is a pic i found on the interwebs that will give you an idea of how it will look.

and one of mine in the early stages of fitting it all together

If you look very carefully in the polished rear wheel you can see no trace whatsoever of Chewie in a banana hammock.

This is proving to be a challenge, but I hope to place it in a similar location to the 04 (to avoid extensive rewiring). Doing this will mean having to relocate the fluid reservoir, so I am opting for a custom reservoir.
