M4 & Tuneboy Unlock Code or Power Commander?

Can anyone provide some advice please? I bought an M4 can for my speedy which looks great (see members bikes area for pic) but it runs too rich on the Arrow map from Triumph and backfires lots on the standard Triumph map. I was recommended to get a tuneboy so went to their site and purchased an unlock code for the ECU. Now my local Triumph dealer says the ECU is already unlocked as I have run the arrow map etc so don't need the unlock code? My trusty Triumph dealer also does not rate the tuneboy and reckons i'd be better off with a power commander even though the tuneboy website shows it can do more than the PC! I'm confused! Anyone else runnning an M4 can and/or tuneboy/power commander and can tell me how best to set it all up? Thanks in advance.

The unlock code from Tuneboy is so you can use the Tuneboy software and cable. Since you already bought the unlock code I would just go with Tuneboy and get the cable. Tuneboy is infinitly better then the PC. You wouldn't even need to buy the cable if someone close by will let you borrow thiers. You can download the Tuneboy software from thier website for free.

Yeah, what he said. Buying the code does you no good if you don't have access to the cable. Your dealership doesn't need the code to flash the ECU, but you have to have the code to use the Tuneboy software. I'm sure someone in the UK (You are in the UK, right?) would let you borrow theirs.

If you want to stop the backfiring you're going to have to disable the Secondary Air Injection (SAI). Easy to do. Search this site for instructions. Then download a non-SAI tune into your ECU.

Re: M4 & Tuneboy Unlock Code or Power Commander?

Thanks Sharpy & crashmastered. I will be taking it to JHS Racing in Bristol Uk as they already have the cable and a dyno to set it all up on nicely. It still concerns me that my local Triumph dealer doesn't rate Tuneboy but I guess they just don't like us messing with their set ups. Booked in for the dyno on Thur 27th so will find out then if it's better I guess. As for the SAI I'll ask JHS RAcing if they can do that at the same time if it helps. Many thanks to you both.

Re: M4 & Tuneboy Unlock Code or Power Commander?

    No problem.

Sounds like you found the right guys to set up your bike. A true setup on the dyno will give you the most out of your pipe. Don't expect a huge change in horsepower. If they can tweak it up to 120 Rear Wheel Horsepower then be very happy.

Disabling the SAI is as easy as removing and plugging a hose. JHS RAcing should know how to give the bike a non-SAI tune if you want to remove the solenoid for the SAI as well.

Dealers can be funny about things like Tuneboy but generally the reason anybody doesn't want to use TB is because they already know how to tune using Power Commander and are afraid of anything new.

Probably they're going to advance the ignition timing by 2-4º (impossible with Power Commander) and build you a custom A/F map that works best on your bike. Also be sure to have them correct your speedometer, and ask them about adjusting the "Prime Pulse" for better starting characteristics.

Have fun and let us know the results! Before and after dyno charts are appreciated if you can post them.

Re: M4 & Tuneboy Unlock Code or Power Commander?

Thanks Crashmasterd. I just spent the last hour researching all the other threads on here about tuneboy and pcm3 and took sharpy's advice and read the threads on SAI removal. One other thing. When I last took the bike into Triumph (to put the standard map back in as the Arrow was running to rich as others on this site have experienced) I asked them to jot down the ECU serial number for me so I could actually generate the unlock code from Tunebot having already paid for it. They said that the ECU number had partially rubbed off. That surpises me and I really need to get the ECU serial number in order to generate the code before going to JHS. Is it something I can gain access to myself with limited experience and basic tools in order to see if the number is rubbed off? I've checked my purchase documentation and can't find it written anywhere either. Cheers for the help so far

Re: M4 & Tuneboy Unlock Code or Power Commander?

You have to connect the ECU to tuneboy to get the ECU serial number. It isn't written on the outside of the unit itself.

So basically you have to have the bike attached to a computer running the Tuneboy software with the Tuneboy cable. Then the software will display the ECU serial number, but it won't let you tweak the map or anything else until you get the Key code from Tuneboy. Once you have the ECU serial number, you email it off to Wayne at Tuneboy and he'll email you back the unique key code that corresponds to your ECU serial number.

Your ECU serial number will just be a series of numbers and letters.

Your Tuneboy key code will look something like this: NOWBOLDROAMCLUEDENTNONE

I suggest you download the Tuneboy software and install it on your computer. It's free. Then you can fool around with the software without doing anything and see what I mean. You'll find the option to "Read ECU serial number" but of course you won't be able to unless you have a cable.

Since you apparently haven't done this yet I suggest you take it down to JHS and see if they'll read the ECU serial number for you. Otherwise you may be ****ed when you get in there to the dyno. Without the Key code they can't do anything. It usually takes 24 hours or more for Wayne to email you your code, and can take longer.

I know one can get MAP's or Tunes from Tuneboy site but are they available anywhere else?

Someone must have some custom tunes posted somewhere?

Sure 'nuff! Click on the downloads link on the left side of your screen on this site. If you don't see that then click on the lil arrow at the top of the page (also left side) and it will open up the bar with the downloads section link. There are some posted on T595 as well I believe.
