    transmission tear down

i went riding today. i got about a mile and a half from the house and decided to yank the front end up. as soon as i slipped the clutch, i started getting a loud clicking/clunking sound coming from my front sprocket area. at first i though it skipped a tooth or something. i pulled off immediately. it would make the sound while sitting in neutral. it was definitely worse when i shifted in first and drove slowly.

anyhow, to make a long story short... i got it home, yanked off the clutch covers and the clutch baskets as well. the clicking sound is MOST DEFINITELY coming from the tranny. i'm not sure what it could be, but it looks like i'm gonna have to split the cases to fix the problem.

anyone have any ideas what might have gone bad in the transmission to cause a clicking noise?
I understand your point and I'd like to agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

    Re: transmission problems.

yep. that would make the most sense. i'm hoping that i got it off the road quick enough to prevent it from causing damage to the other tranny internals.

i'll keep you guys updated. i'll be taking a shitload of pictures and probably do a writeup since this isn't a small task by any means.

oh believe me...it's not being ridden till it's fixed. what i meant was that it took me a couple hundred feet before i could safely pull off the road when it happened. i basically parked it right there, hiked back home, got my truck, and loaded/unloaded speedy. so hopefully it didn't wreck the tranny too badly in that short time span that the engine was running.

    Re: transmission problems.

Took mine in to Triumph Detroit in mid September, just after the problem started. They had it about 4 weeks start to finish. The problem was 2nd gear on the output shaft, missing 1 tooth. They replaced the broken gear as well as 2nd gear on the input shaft, for safe measure. I'm pretty sure they also replaced the bearings on the ends of the shafts.

All in all, I was pretty disappointed that my bike broke, being only a few months old. Regardless, the folks up at Triumph Detroit handled the situation well. I know most of you guys on here hate dealerships, as do I for the most part, but if there really is a "good dealer" list out there, add Triumph Detroit to it.

    Re: transmission problems.

yay. started on it this morning. took about 4hrs to yank out. i coulda probably done it in 3 hrs, but i had to make a couple specialty tools to loosen the adjusting/lock rings on the swingarm
