Which attributes and properties make a motorcycle helmet safe? When choosing a new helmet for a new riding season, many riders mostly pay attention to comfort, looks, and safety ratings. But in a world where a safety rating sticker doesn’t mean much, you’d better pay attention to the helmet construction and materials used to produce its outer shell.

Our in-house technical writer Michael Grayen wrote an article on crucial aspects of any motorcycle helmet production. Almost all helmets employ several layers of protection, namely a hard outer shell, Styrofoam mid-layer, and inner liner with padding. Since two inner layers don’t change much and made from the same or similar materials, we will be focusing our attention on different materials used to manufacture hard helmet shells and their properties.
