    Winter Project

My latest bike, 2006, cat N speed triple, bit of a mess but I like a challenge! Already sourced a few parts including Acewell speedo and projector style headlights.

Is the frame straight? The rest will polish right out.

It doesn't actually look that bad. A lot of the wrecked parts are stuff half the guys replace anyway. Might be a prime opportunity to upgrade the forks and brakes while you're at it.

Frame should be straight, Cat N (cosmetic damage), sub frame was bent and already replaced that.

Headlight and speedo mounted on original broken & re-shaped bracket.

All hooked up and everything working (that I could test) using OEM gearbox speed sensor, took an educated guess on pulses per revolution and set at 20, won't know how close until I get it on the road and check against a GPS but turning the wheel by hand looks promising.

Interesting that although OEM clocks only have a low fuel warning, the sender varies from approx 15-135 ohm, so set Acewell to read levels rather than just low fuel warning. Not sure I will get full sweep (float stem is short on sender) but should see level change in last 1/3 of tank. Also put 47 ohm resistor across wires to ECU to fool MIL, still got to check that has worked when I test everything with TuneECU.

Teed into Neutral switch feed to ECU and got 'N' on speedo and no engine lock outs so that's looking good.

Teed into coil No1 feed for tacho.

Picked up oil light feed from old clock wiring, along with permanent live, switched live, left/right indicators, main beam and ground.

Going to get separate temp sensor to fit on top hose as I do not want to mess with OEM feed to ECU as it switches the fan.

Might do a full Colour code/pickup point wiring diagram on a future post if anyone wants to do the same, seems to be a lot of info on different forums but not all in one place.

Also fitted a Motogadget M-lock as the original ignition lock was trashed, had to make some wiring adaptations from the M-lock wiring plan to get it to work, will also post that wiring diagram when I draw it out a bit neater than my original diagram!

Anyway here are some pics of mounting bracket, lights and Acewell speedo.

Cleaned up the fork seals while access was good, last MOT on this bike had advisory 'Nearside front shock has light misting of oil', used the old dirt bike riders trick of sliding something thin and flexible between stanchion and seal to clean any muck out (slide dust seal out of the way first), best thing is 35mm camera film (if your old enough to remember that and can find some!)... I used a really thin (0.5) nylon guitar pick and it worked a treat!

Note: This won't work if seals are leaking bad and are worn or damaged.

    Update:
Reshaped top yoke to remove ignition switch hole.
Removed horrible knee pads, tank pad and stickers from tank, using wife's hair drier! and some petrol to get sticky stuff off.
Fitted ultra low renthal bars, changed coolant and had to do emergency repair on alternator feed wires to regulator... wire starting smoking at connection block due to weak joint!

Moving right along. Plenty to upgrade on the '06. Brakes, Charging system, coil boots, etc. Personally I don't feel the headlights are one of those items, but no shame in "going your own way".

Hey Joe (I think there's a song in there somewhere)... 'going my own way' too right, better to be a wolf than one of the sheep!
