    starter rattle

    G'day fellas,
My 95 trip makes a nasty rattle when the starter is engaged.
As soon as the engine fires the noise goes away.
Mechanic told me it was the starter motor so I bought one, fitted it, but it still makes the same noise.

    Any ideas?

sprag clutch. Im not sure if the 95's had any issues with them but that would be my guess if it only makes noise on the turnover of the engine.

    Cheers
Is it much of a job to change it?

Yup. Total engine disassembly. It's also a common problem.

    My condolences.

    Excellent,

Ive just spent a lot of money on the bike as well,
New wilbers rear shock, resprung & valved forks, braided front brake lines with new pads front & rear, K&N air filter, service & tune, new tyres

How much roughly are the parts required to fix the problem?
Is the problem with the sprag clutch likely to reoccur?

    Cheers Brad

The sprag clutch itself should be around $260 USD, but you'll also need gaskets and the like. If you're careful the problem won't reoccur. The trick is to NEVER try to start the bike with an iffy battery. If it doesn't crank over good and strong, stop immediately and charge or replace the battery. Practice good battery maintenance, and use a battery tender.

I've never had it happen myself, but there's lots of stories about the problem.

Time to practice your bump starting and always park on top of a hill.
