    heated grips

    Hi all,
Just got heated grips fitted, currently wired directly to the battery. How, what or where should I connect to, so not to have either a flat battery or a fried speed triple. Any help welcome but please bear in mind that I am not very mechanically minded so please keep it simple!!!

    Re: heated grips

I installed some 'In Bar Heated Grips' that are for snowmobiles. Got the idea from Canyon Chasers. They have a section on their website that has instructions on how to do various DIY projects. Here is the link for the heated grips and how to setup a relay/switch system to ensure you don't kill your battery.

    Installing heated grips: http://canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/heated-grips.php
    Installing Relay & Switch: http://canyonchasers.net/shop/generic/relay.php

Total cost of this setup ran me about $25 for the grips & $25 for the relay, switch, & wires.

Here is another link about various heated grip options:

What are heated grips and why use 'em?
I can understand airconditioned grips, but heated ones?

Why yes I do. Wife works three jobs and I work two. She's not always there when I 'need' her. So I take care of my own business on occasion. Not often enough to need heated grips though.

    Re: heated grips

I've got heated grips on my Speedy. Just ran a 3-way (Hi/Off/Lo) switch off the left headlight assembly. They're brilliant, really. Great if it's not obscenely cold out, below 20 F they don't seem to make much difference at all, but between 30-50F they're a real joy. I can ride with lightweight summer short gloves that make controlling the bike a lot easier, not to mention taking the gloves on and off, and my hands stay warm. The worst part of cold weather riding is the pain in your hands when the blood starts circulating again, and these make life a lot easier.

    Re: heated grips

That's not quite what he was asking, guys.

Go down to the local auto parts store and buy a driving light solenoid. It should come with instructions and a diagram on how to wire it to a switch. Wire the solenoid to the battery, and use a micro-switch (available at Radio-shack) to energize the solenoid. Take a hot lead from the running lights in the headlight, or from the headlights themselves to power the switch.

Doing it this way, when you turn off the ignition the grips go off automatically. The micro switch can then allow you to turn the grips on and off. There should be enough room inside the factory switch gear for a micro switch. (I did it this way)

Personally I never found the need for the dual heat ranges available with some heated grips. If I want them on I turn them on. If I want them off, I turn them off. With the switch mounted on the factory switch gear it's easy and quick to turn off and on.
