Sprag Fitted and Speedy STARTs ... YIPEEEEEEE

OK here is a bit of a write up on changing the sprag clutch.
Before I start I’ll give you some background to this point in time. I have a 2005/6 Speed Triple and like a few other owners of this model, have been pained with starting issues. I had major starting issues just over two years ago and ended up due to time constraints having the local Triumph dealership fit a replacement sprag kit in my bike. The replacement fixed the problem. Speedy started first time hot and cold.
Fast forward two years and I started having the same issue as before. Speedy started when cold or cooled down from a run but would not start when hot. Because of what had happened before I knew it was the sprag again.

In Aus they want upward of $800AUD for the Sprag kit, but in the US the Sprag is only $400 so thanks to Joe Houle I got one sent over.

Its an easy process to change the sprag. The only tricky bit is holding the sprag still while undoing and then retightening the retaining nut. Triumph have a special tool which will cost you around $100 but I fabricated a tool up for the cost of 2 X 10mm shaft bolts (@ $1.50) and used some scrap flat bar steel.
The pic’s below should explain how i fab’d the tool.
To get the two pins needed to lock in to the sprag I drilled a 9mm hole in the ends of the two metal pieces and then tapped them with a thread to take a 10mm bolt. The bolt I used had a thread and a shaft. I threaded the bolt in to the metal bar with thread lock and then cut the excess thread off and the cut off the bolt head. The end result – sturdy pins.
I made one of the metal pieces long so that it would reach the ground. This was so I could use the ground as a brace point when applying tension to the sprag. I’ll let the pics tell the rest.

When I got the sprag replaced last time the dealership told me they had put the upgraded sprag in the bike. AS you can see from the comparison pics of the old and new sprag and sprag gear, you can see how much smaller the older type is and also the size difference between the sprag gear center hubs.

From these comparisons you can understand why the earlier ones failed.

Yes the "newer" bikes have the "newer" sprag.

That kit retrofits the older bikes to the current sprag
