I know a lot of guys have had their starter clutch go out. I'm not sure if you guys are just replacing the sprag or what. Triumph has a full kit (expensive @ $550) but its all updated components from the starter all the way to the crank. I had a sprint in today that I installed this "sprag repair kit" and want to show everyone on here the install and differences in components.
Here is everything in the kit, it comes with starter, covers, all new gears, new sprag, new RR bracket, and gaskets
I took off the little cover first. I laid everything out as it came off, but it is unnecessary because all the new stuff eliminates all the old washers, shafts, etc.
this is the new cover, shaft, and gear. no washers, the gear is beefed up, and the shaft is thicker :jerkoff:
dowel pins are not included and need to be transferred to the new covers and stay on the cases
Here is another look at old and new components
I took off the starter after the 2nd cover came off, its easier to pull out that way. and installed the new starter before putting the cover back on, leaving the bolts loose until the cover was torqued.
spragg goes in exactly like the old one comes out. everything turns the same way. the sprag goes into the gear whichever way is harder to put in. you put it in the easy way and it catches the gear in the wrong direction. The only washer (big washer) included in the new kit will go behind the sprag gear in front of the chain gear. also the idler gear under the second cover will reuse the old shaft.
new cover on w/ gasket, torque to 9nm. then the new shaft and idler gear, then cover and gasket.
You'll have one nut with the kit. this goes with the new RR bracket because it doesn't have a welded nut on the back.
None of these components match up to the old stuff. This is all designed to be a better system.
hope this helps someone.
