Hey guys, I've acquired my cousins 2008 speed triple and unfortunately he has passed away so I cant ask him any of the questions I have on the bike. I had a 1996 Yamaha Virago 750 before this bike so its a bit of a change.

First, is it normal for me to only be able to start the bike when the handle bars are turned to the left. Faulty wiring? If the handle bars are straight the dash wont light up. It'll only turn on if the handle bars are turned to the left first, then I can turn them whichever direction I want.

Second, I cant for the life of me get this bike into neutral! When I push the lever down it'll stay down and not spring back up, same with when I push it up. There's also an aftermarket setup for the shifter and the rear brake foot controls. I still have all the factory parts so I'm not sure if it might be worth it to just put the factory parts back on and see what happens?

Its bothering the hell out of me so please help!

Some of the older triples had issues of wear on the cables rubbing against the headstock. Not sure if that was fixed for the with the 2008 changes or not but I would start there. Make sure nothings being pulled when moving bars left to right.

I have nothing to offer for the shift issue. Rereading the post I’m not sure it’s a mechanical issue. Neutral is found with a half click up on the shifter from first gear. Maybe it’s the aftermarket setup. I wouldn’t put the ORM shift linkage on. Its over engineered and clumsy. Use a Sunline shit lever or something similar. A little searching and you should find the right match.

It's not normal but some bikes do develop an electrical short or open where the wires come out of the switch and bend around the steering head. Can be pretty difficult to track down, see if you can get any more slack in that area.

Every bike's shift lever is spring loaded to return to the middle position after an up or down shift. It the external mechanism is binding that could prevent it from working. If it's not the external linkage then there is something wrong internally, I think fixing that will require pulling the engine and splitting the cases.

Okay so got out this morning and started messing around with the bike. Looking at pictures of the bike completely stock online, I realized somebody had put the aftermarket shifter on upside down at the transmission. So when I thought i was shifting down i was actually shifting up. Finding neutral is no problem now.

You were right with the wires! The wires that come out of the ignition and dash were zip tied too tight causing the to rub against the frame and each other. There is just barely enough wire to have an electrical connection.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys!

I had a 2008 Speed Triple. If you can't get neutral step one is to put the stock shifter on. If that doesn't work you have other problems. Maybe they disconnected a switch or wire to make the aftermarket parts fit. Your handlebar angle thing could be a related issue.
