Chain length

Ok. Just got myself a vortex rear 44T rear sprocket (in BLACK) and a new Gold 520 chain. I'm staying 18T on front. Stay with the 106 stock length on the chain or add 2. On the Vortex sheet it says take the difference in tooth size divide by 2 then add 1. So with my 3rd grade math thats add 2. But if the 106 fits an I loosing adjusment options by adding 2.

Or is this a completely dumb question.

What were we talking about again........ :p
Unless you want to add length (to change the geometry or get more range from the tensioner), if the 106 fits... don't add.

You want the tensioner to have enough range of movement that is does not bind. This can kill tensioners quickly.

GOLD? :wtf:

IMHO, black looks good and doesn't show grease and grime. ;D

I have a gold on already :twofinger: Its the wrong darn sprocket anyway, mofo's. :jerkit:
Limey,
How do you like the 520 conversion?

I am considering this, but can't decide if I should go +2 on the rear sprocket at the same time and make 1st gear nearly useless.

Doc - How many links are you using? Or are you just telling Limey he's stubby. ;)

The 520 was on it with an Afam 43 rear when I got the bike and I've never had a problem with it apart from they don't last as long as stock. I like the 43 rear. Just gonna try the 44 to see how that works.
How many miles are you getting from the 520 chain?

How is the Afam 43t rear holding up?

I got 14k out of the set up now, should have got a little more but I live on a dirt road and had probs with sand and grit for a while until I changed lube to the Dupont Teflon. The Afam 43 is totally shot and missing a tooth. The chain looks like it could of lasted a little longer, the Afam is a real light weight alloy and took most of the abuse.
Ever tried having aluminum sprockets cryo-treated?

I cryo lots of parts (just had another set of pistons done), and I'm thinking about trying it on a sprocket set.

Thanks. You have me more interested in a 520 conversion. Now what rear tooth count? Hmmmmm...

I'm replacing the above with a Vortex Black (supposedly 30% harder) 44t ($64.95) rear and 18t front ($34.95) Also a RK Takasago XW-ring chain (GB520GXW) $124.99.
Ok if you go up one in rear does acceleration increase and top speed decrease or is that with going down one in the front???

Going 1up faster acceleration slightly lower top end.
i hope you got steel this time!...broken teeth?...holy shit you like to wheelie :horse:

Both have the same effect. Dropping a tooth in the front is about the same as adding 2-3 in the rear, both will give you better acceleration, but less top end.
Who said what now. ;D
Who shot who in the what now :wtf: !!!! Damn I'm dumb, can't keep up with any of this.... I think I'm just gonna  and :jerkoff:!!!!

A decent article on sprocket gearing - http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0008_gearing/
I meant to answer this earlier.

A chain is a measure of 100 LINKS. or 66 feet.

:tongue2:
