DOT 3 or DOT 4

Does anyone know what type of break fluid the S3 has comming out of the factory. I have always used DOT 3 on all my bikes so I don't really know the difference between DOT3 and DOT4. The reason I am asking is because the rear break resevoir is a little low and I need to top it off. I just want to make sure I am not mixing different types.

THX in Advance.

In terms of chemical composition I don't think there is a big difference between them. DOT4 just has a higher boiling point than DOT3. As far as I know you're safe to use DOT3, 4 and 5.1 in your brake system without any problems. If you want to go to DOT5 though (which is silicone based) I think you've got to replace some of the seals as well as flush the whole system.

Cheers,

Phil
You can mix Dot 3 and 4, but you'd be better off bleeding the old stuff out and replacing with Dot 4. Dot 4 has a higher boiling point than Dot 3.
