I have not taken the fuel pump out, so a Q for those who have: what sort of mechanism does the fuel level sensor of 1050 have? A floating styrofoam ball in a pipe like on some older Triumphs or a hinged floater of some sort?

It seems mine is stuck. I very much enjoyed my hike (in full leathers) down the deserted back roads after I ran her dry. ;D Gladly after some time a kid on a moped rode past and he was kind enough to sell me a Coke bottle worth of fuel.

Float on a bar. You can see it through the gas cap if you have a lighter. ;D

You can see it though...just use a flashlight ;)

The level is about what you described. It is a thin metal arm with a float on the end. When the fuel level drops to a given point, the arm makes contact with a switch that turns on the low fuel light.

It's a bit fuzzy, but you can see the arm and float:
