I was curious as to how everybody bike idled. Mine is back in the shop again! Because of irradic idling and eventually cutting out at lights.
So I was curious especially on older triples (97-01).
My needles goes up and down between 1200 and 1000 like a pscho.

If your plugs are in good shape, look at the idle air servo. It may need to be cleaned for smoother operation.

Also, open the throttles and look at the back side of the intake valves - with the airbox removed. See if you have a bunch of carbon on the back of the valves.

forgot to mention that I just had the stepper motor replaced.
When you had it replaced, did they make sure that is was set up correctly and the TPS sensor voltage was correct?

I will have to ask them. Shouldn't they (Triumph mechanics) know this.

Yes, they SHOULD.

After the stepper motor was replaced, was the idle smooth, or did it surge then as well?

I picked it up Tuesday and as I was coming home it seemed the idle was geting worse so I brought it back to them Wednesday.

My bet is they replaced the motor and did not check the TPS voltage.
You bike thinks it is at a different throttle position than it actually is, and the air is not correct for the fuel. As a result, the motor is over correcting in both directions - open and closed.
