Was he used by connections of his girlfriend? Whether he did actually execute the attack, or whether he was a very convenient useful idiot come patsy for them, it seems a viable possibility.
Each of the most successful jihadi attacks have been executed by attacking in a manner that is somewhat unprecedented, thus the security agencies weren't looking for a white former accountant with a gambling habit. In France, nobody expected a truck to be driven through a crowd. Prior to 2001, nobody expected a passenger airliner to be used as a cruise missile.

It has taken so long because ISIS uses human shields.
Senior leadership will cart a 10yr old kid around with them 24/7.
The other reason is we are walking a fine line between letting the “US backed forces” win the war, while preventing them from committing non-stop war atrocities in our presence. Now we are about to see the Kurds claim what they hold for themselves. It’s never going to end in that region. We are wearing beer goggles and trying to fuck a porcupine.

My point is that this would still be dragging on if Obama was still in office. Seems like things have been expedited under Trump. I’m well aware of the tribal fighting that will continue. That’s nothing new to that area.
