Hello, I am new to this site and I am about to go and buy a 1999 speed triple. Here is my story. My first bike was (still have it) a 73 Triumph Bonnie 750. My dad and I restored it to working condition for my mom but she had a hard time kick starting it (1 time it bit her) so she never road it. When I turned 16 I began to use it as I please and became a graduation present for high school. I am now 22 and have put over 15,000 miles on it, burned a hole in the right piston, and rebuilt the top end twice, also on my second set of clutches. Done most of the work my self with pops help. And I have fought oil leaks everyday. Love the bike to death and will never be sold or traded. I was ready to upgrade to some thing more sporty, newer, and LESS MAINTANCE. So I started looking and fell in love with the Speed Triple. I did a demo ride at local dealer with new 06 S3 and loved it. I had a grin from ear to ear. Wanted to buy the 06 right then and there. 1 problem is that I am a college student about to graduate in Dec. 06 and have no money. I went to college to become a professional Pilot and it was costly, many loans. I didn't want to get another loan and good old dad wasn't about to lend me any $$ either. I found a way to get $$ through some friends. Become a volunteer for a medical study. The study I did paid $3,300 for 16 days. Also I had some money in savings. The decision was to buy a used S3. Now what model? I like the 99-01 body not sure why. The search was on. Many hrs on the net. Finally I found one that was available (funny that people forget to remove ads online after a sale, many dead ends) and in my price range. Beautiful 99 S3 almost 12,000 miles in located in PA, I live in MI. My friend and I are going to make the trip this Tue Sep 19th. We are taking a car and I am riding the bike back, about a 6-7hr trip. So wish me luck and I will report back with how it went. Here is a pic of the bike.

Good story.

Don't worry why you like it or if anyone else does. Get what you want and can afford. Keep us informed when you get it.

;D
+2 If people worried about what others thought Triumph never would have made calf-poo yellow a color! ;) Or nuclear red for that matter!

I also bought an 01 Speed Triple about 3yrs ago. My first bike was a Honda 750 Nighthawk. Traded it in on a dealer demo (3000+ miles) 01 Speed Trip. The difference was astonishing!

Just being a cheap SOB... I have never bought any vehicle brand new. After I bought it / started riding it, I met several other triumph riders who had taken it for a spin or knew more about its history. Apparently it was origianlly Nuclear Red (Metallic Flamingo Pink) and the dealer couldn't find anyone secure enough in their masculinity to ride a pink bike. The dealer swapped out all the body work for the black color.

My friends affectionately refer to it as "The Black Whore" becasuse almost everyone in K'Town has taken it for a ride. It has been a GREAT motorcycle, little to no mechanical problems aside from regular maintenance.

IMO, the 1999-2001 body style is the best looking of the bunch (still drool over the 05 body style though). The only other triumph that I currently drool over if the 675 Daytona and still trying to convince "She who must be obeyed" as to the need for anotherf street bike :)

The saving grace of the Speed Triple is lower speeding tickets, can't take the wind buffeting beating of speeds in excess of 100 for long!

Hope yours provides as much problem free pleasure as mine has....

Wow. That bike will definitely draw attention :D
I love my 2000 S3: the looks, the performance, the miserly fuel consumption, basically everything but the seat. I think you've picked a winner!
