Just pulled the gas tank to run wires for the GPS. The two vent hoses popped off before I could see which went where. One is just a hose, the other has a plastic joint a few inches from the end. Any idea which goes where?

Get a manual. Somebody just posted one - it has a picture.
Found it, thanks.

"Fuel tank - If your fuel tank SUX air like a moderator when you open it, the air and fuel drain lines have been put on incorrectly. This can cause starting problems and can damage the tank. Remove the tank and make sure the line with the disc valve is on the outside (left side)."

Blow some air down one of the 2 holes at filler cap. The lower, recessed hole should connect to tube without valve. Higher up hole that mates with gas cap should connect to tube with valve on it.

Edit. Browsing the forums you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right. There are plenty of posts where the left/right is the wrong way around.

Sorry to revive dead thread, but mine are connected based on this advice and I still have slight starting problems and possibly some (light?) suction. When I start the bike, the first time the idle slowly dies out and the bike shuts off. The next time, it starts right up to high idle and runs well...not sure what it could be.

Thanks -- followed the advice below and had no problems (sucking or otherwise) on 150 mi. ride. And it did end up the opposite of the above -- the hose with the valve went inside. And, BTW, I've lookied at the service manual several times and see no picture of how it should go.

So are one of these two breather lines supposed to let air into the tank, and not let stuff out? I hooked my lines back up after having the bike apart, and even though I kept track of which hose goes where, I may have inverted the valved one. Still getting some suction.

I have an '05 and the disc valve was taken off a long time ago. I have one plain tube coming from each vent with no issues whatever. When I had the disk valve on, the tank would suck air when opening the fill cap. If I remember correctly that is when someone on the forum said we didn't need the disk valve at all. They were correct.
